BEERS FROM OUR OWN BREWERY ARE A TRUE ECO-ACT
Oluthuone Panimomestari is located in the heart of central Tampere, right next to Tampere Railway Station and just a short walk from Nokia Arena. Among regulars at Plevna, the taproom is commonly known by its nickname “Olkkari.” The doors first opened on October 6, 1996. Before that, the premises were home to Pub Winston and the Leivonpesä café. From the very beginning, Olkkari’s concept has been all about beer. Table service, proper serving temperatures, and a strong focus on beer quality and freshness have been core principles from day one. Today, the bar features 17 taps, offering a wide selection of beers, mead, and ciders—from pale and dark lagers to IPAs, stouts, wheat beers, and changing seasonal specialties. The beers are brewed at Olkkari’s own brewery, Koskipanimo. One of the taproom’s best-known beers is Kippari, brewed exclusively for Olkkari by Koskipanimo since 2006. As part of the anniversary celebrations, a long-awaited favorite is also making a comeback on tap: Mörkö Imperial IPA. Koskipanimo’s products are also available for takeaway daily until 9 PM. In addition to beer, the taproom offers a selection of whiskies, wines, and cocktails, with a full alcohol license. During the summer, guests can also enjoy a terrace on the pedestrian street.
Olkkari is run by an experienced team. Heidi Piirainen serves as the long-time restaurant manager, alongside shift manager Riku Salonen. Behind the bar, you can also find Antti and Krista, as well as visiting staff from Plevna. The year 2026 is a special one for Olkkari, as the taproom celebrates its 30th anniversary. A variety of events will take place throughout the year, including Sunday bingo every other week and a monthly guided beer tasting hosted by Riku and Antti on Mondays at 6 PM. The cocktail of the month will showcase gems from the 1990s, and live music will also be part of the anniversary celebrations. The latest events can be found at: www.oluthuone.org
The official anniversary will be celebrated on October 6, 2026 and we will raise our glasses to toast three decades of Olkkari as part of Tampere’s beer culture!

WHAT IS PLEVNA?
Why does a restaurant established in Tampere in 1994 have the name of a small Bulgarian village?
The answer lies in the history of the Finlayson cotton mill. Weaving halls used to be named after historical events of that period. The Finlayson weaving hall was built in March 1877 – a month after a war broke out between Russia and Turkey that lasted almost a year.
As Finland was under Russian rule at the time, the war was closely followed through the press in Tampere. The Turkish army was strongly defending its grounds in the village of Plevna, and the Russians couldn’t conquer it. In order to resolve the situation, a Finnish guard of volunteers was formed which included workers from Finlayson.
First the Finnish guard conquered the well-barricaded village of Gornyi Dubnjak. Next, the Finnish guard helped the Russians with their siege and ultimately, the village surrendered at the beginning of December. The victory was also celebrated in Tampere and the new weaving hall of Finlayson was named Plevna.
Back in the days when the siege of Plevna was still on-going, a restaurant was opened in Tampere carrying the name Plevna
